This is fantastic. I have been waiting / putting this off for soooo long. Videos, I mean. I have wanted to post videos, but I was also waiting for it to be perfect. Better camera, cleaner shop, more experience with camera, the best software/lighting/this and that….. The thing about perfection is that it’s unattainable and it’s important to remember that. After all, we’re only human….

So, today’s video featured a little bit of wood turning….a lot of sanding and then the finished product. A Wooden Mallet. Turned Mallet. Woodturner’s Mallet. Many different names. The Mallet started as a blank that I had previously made consisting of Maple and Cherry. I had milled several planks measuring approximately 12″ x 2.5″ and glued them together to form blanks that are approximately 12″ x 2.5″ x 2.5″. (As you can see on Instagram, and also in the picture to the right, I have many blanks for many future projects.)
The first step, as in any turning project was to find center on both ends of the blank. Then it goes onto the lathe. I started out by rough turning the blank to a cylinder and then began my shaping. I knew that I was planning on giving this mallet away and wanted to make sure I was producing a quality piece while also learning new skills on the lathe. I am very pleased with the end result and I am looking forward to making more turned projects in the future.
As I stated in the video, this Mallet will be part of a giveaway that I will be announcing this Wednesday – January 10. Keep your eye on Instagram and Facebook for the details. I will discuss it a little more on Wednesday’s video and I’m honestly excited to be giving this Mallet to someone who will enjoy it for years to come.
